A Romantic Engagement Session in West Olive, Michigan
One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is creating an experience that feels personal to every couple. This session perfectly reflected their story—from including their beloved dog to ending the evening with a breathtaking Lake Michigan sunset.
We began surrounded by peaceful wooded trails before finishing along one of West Michigan's beautiful beaches. The combination created a gallery that felt both adventurous and incredibly romantic.
As a Grand Rapids engagement photographer, I love helping couples choose locations that fit their personalities while creating a gallery full of variety.
Starting among the trees
The first half of their session took place in a quiet wooded park just outside Grand Rapids. Towering trees, winding trails, and soft evening light created the perfect backdrop for relaxed, natural portraits.
Of course, the real star of the first half of the session was their sweet black Labrador mix.
Including your dog in your engagement session is one of the best ways to make your photos feel authentic. Pets have a way of bringing out genuine smiles, laughter, and moments that simply can't be posed.
Watching these two love on their pup—covering him in kisses while she happily soaked up every bit of attention—made for some of my favorite images from the entire evening.
These are the moments that make engagement photography so meaningful.
Why You Should Bring Your Dog to Your Engagement Session
Your engagement photos should tell your story, and for many couples, that story includes a four-legged best friend.
Bringing your dog can:
- Make your session feel more personal.
- Help you relax in front of the camera.
- Create natural, candid moments.
- Preserve memories of this season of life together.
If you're considering bringing your dog, I always recommend having a family member or friend available to take them home midway through the session so we can transition into portraits of just the two of you.
Ending the Evening Along Lake Michigan
After saying goodbye to their pup, we headed toward the Lake Michigan shoreline for the second half of the evening.
Golden hour on the lakeshore never disappoints.
The warm sunlight, soft dunes, gentle waves, and open sky created an entirely different feel from the wooded portraits earlier in the evening. Their outfit change complemented the neutral tones of the beach perfectly, giving their gallery even more variety.
As the sun began to dip lower, they simply slowed down and enjoyed being together. Some of my favorite images came from those quiet in-between moments—holding hands, embracing in the dunes, and soaking in one of those incredible West Michigan sunsets.
Why I Love Combining Two Locations
One of the easiest ways to create a diverse engagement gallery is by choosing two nearby locations with completely different scenery.
For this session, we captured:
- Romantic woodland portraits with lush greenery.
- Candid moments with their dog.
- Golden hour beach images along Lake Michigan.
- Soft sunset portraits in the dunes.
The final gallery tells a complete story while offering so much visual variety.
Planning Your Own West Michigan Engagement Session
Whether you're dreaming of towering trees, sandy beaches, downtown streets, or somewhere completely unique to your relationship, your engagement session should feel like an extension of who you are.
We'll choose locations that fit your vision while creating space for genuine moments instead of stiff poses. My goal is always for you to walk away feeling like you spent an evening together—not like you survived a photoshoot.
If you're looking for a Grand Rapids engagement photographer or planning a wedding anywhere in West Michigan, I'd love to help you create an engagement session that feels relaxed, joyful, and authentically you.
